What Is Hypnosis?

is an article by Dr. Gérard Sunnen--one of several by a number of authors included in a compilation entitled
" Medical Hypnosis: An Introduction and Clinical Guide," published in the Medical Guides to Complementary and Alternative Medicine; Marc S. Micozzi, series editor

What is hypnosis?

This has already been answered by many and I have quoted some of the best answers below:

"Hypnosis is simply the deliberate use of the imagination, paralleled with strong focus and relaxation. Done well, it can work in the same way as when you are dreaming - the mind's 'Reality Simulator'…. So when you go into hypnosis, you simply get very involved with an inner reality … it's not just about colorful imagination, it's about controlling your attention - getting it focused on one or a few things.

What is Hypno Therapy?

Hypno therapy uses hypnosis to access the subconscious mind to find solutions to problems that the conscious mind is having trouble dealing with. If you have trouble with unhealthy habits, like smoking or overeating, or if you want to cure any phobias you have, or if you just want to feel more relaxed and confident, hypno therapy can help you achieve your goals.

The mind is basically divided into two parts. The conscious mind is what we use when we are awake and alert. We use it to reason and make decisions. The unconscious mind is where we store our memories, dreams, and thoughts. Under hypnosis, we can easily access the unconscious mind and all the thoughts and information stored there. In essence, the conscious mind is turned off, even though you are aware of your surroundings and in complete control of yourself. You are simply bypassing the thinking and reasoning parts of the conscious mind.

A hypnotherapist is someone who can induce a hypnotic state, or help you become deeply relaxed so that you can access your subconscious mind. Some people are able to learn to do this for themselves. With hypno therapy, the therapist will get you into the hypnotic state and make suggestions about the changes you want to make. These suggestions will be implanted in your mind and stay with you after you come out of your hypnotic state.

hypnosis and hypnotherapy

"Modern techniques of hypnosis are nothing like the stereotyped dangling watch, with commands like "when I click my fingers you will forget..." That old approach is neither helpful nor effective. However now the techniques are not at all manipulative and they are extremely effective. YOU are the one who is in control!

Modern methods are about helping you to change your mind set. By giving you powerful information in a relaxed and open state of mind, you can get past the barriers in your thinking, overcome your fears, and adopt effective new strategies to transform your life.

Self improvement with hypnosis is so effective because it enables you to take a break from your normal way of going about things and to appreciate other, perhaps more effective approaches. The calmness of the hypnotic state then allows you to choose which new ways are best for you."

For the medically minded, a good thorough and comprehensive article about hypnosis can be found via the link on the left entitled What Is Hypnosis.

What are the benefits of hypnotherapy?

The use of hypnosis in a therapeutic way can allow access to more of your mind’s power for healing or self development. Using powerful imagination to visualise and to feel a different way of being or behaving alters your responses next time the situation is encountered. This can be used to great effect to undo ‘errors’ in programming where a fear or anxiety state has been linked to normally safe objects or situations (phobias and panic attacks).

5 Hypnosis Myths Exploded

OVER the years, hypnosis has picked up all sorts of weird associations from stage hypnotists, the media and superstition. This is a great shame, because in reality, hypnosis is your single most effective tool for change. Hypnosis is your birthright, and you should know how to use it so it doesn’t use you. Here we dispel the biggest hypnosis myths.

Hypnosis Myth 1) All hypnosis is the same

As with anything, hypnosis can be good, bad or indifferent. The most common is old-style authoritarian hypnosis of the type “You are getting sleepy, you are feeling confident”. Unsurprisingly, this sort of hypnosis doesn’t work well with many people. Good hypnosis uses subtle psychological principles and advanced communication patterns. It’s like the difference between a football coach who thinks you’ll perform best if he yells at you, compared with the more elegant style of a great leader who knows that to get the best from his people, he needs to understand motivation, to cajole, encourage and reward.

Hypnosis Downloads.com offers hundreds of sessions using the best type of hypnosis.

Hypnosis Myth 2) Subliminals work

Subliminals are words that you can’t hear. Common sense says they shouldn’t work, and there’s no research proving that they do.

Hypnosis Myth 3) Some people can’t be hypnotized

The only reason you can’t be hypnotized is if you are incapable of paying attention due to extremely low IQ or brain damage. That’s not to say that every hypnotist can hypnotize you however. The more flexible the hypnotist, the more effective she will be with the largest number of people.

Hypnosis Myth 4) Hypnosis is something weird that other people do to you

If you couldn't go into hypnosis, you wouldn't be able to sleep, to learn, or get nervous through 'negative self hypnosis'. (You know when you imagine things going wrong and it makes you feel anxious? Well that's self hypnosis!) Hypnosis is simply a deliberate utilization of the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) or dream state. We’re not giving people medication here – if it wasn’t a natural ability, hypnosis wouldn’t work!

Hypnosis Myth 5) You lose control in hypnosis

Crazy news stories, stage hypnotists and gossip have created the illusion that you lose control in hypnosis. In fact, when hypnotized, you are relaxed and focused – and able to choose to get up and walk away at any time. You choose to give your attention to the hypnotist, and you can withdraw it at any time. If you have been scared of hypnosis in the past, this article has hopefully convinced you to at least give it a try. But remember, ensure what you’re getting is the real thing.
